A steering knuckle connects key wheel-end, suspension, steering, and brake components while supporting the wheel hub or bearing. Because designs vary by vehicle and position, a compatible replacement must match more than the model name. What a Steering Knuckle Does

On a typical front suspension, the knuckle provides mounting points for the hub or bearing, brake assembly, strut or control arm, ball joint, and tie-rod end. Steering input moves the tie rod and turns the knuckle around its suspension pivots. Depending on the vehicle, a rear suspension knuckle or wheel carrier may support similar wheel-end components without performing the same steering function.

 

Front, Rear, Left, and Right Knuckles

A front steering knuckle and rear steering knuckle can differ in geometry, mounting points, and provisions for steering or suspension hardware. Left and right parts are also commonly mirror-specific; left means the driver's side and right means the passenger's side when viewed from the seated driving position on a left-hand-drive vehicle. Terms such as suspension knuckle, wheel knuckle, upright, and wheel carrier may overlap, but the exact product description and position remain decisive.

 

Possible Signs of Knuckle Damage

A knuckle should be inspected after a significant curb strike, collision, wheel-impact event, or repair that reveals a crack, deformation, damaged mounting bore, or stripped fastener location. An abnormal wheel angle or an alignment that cannot be brought into specification may also justify inspection. Pulling, vibration, noise, steering-wheel misalignment, and uneven tire wear do not prove that the knuckle is faulty; tires, alignment settings, control arms, ball joints, tie rods, struts, and hub bearings can cause similar symptoms.
