What are spark plug wires?

Spark plug wires, also known as ignition cables or spark plug leads, are a set of wires that connect the ignition coil or distributor to the spark plugs in an internal combustion engine. They are responsible for transmitting high-voltage electrical energy from the ignition source to the spark plugs, which ignite the fuel-air mixture in the engine's cylinders.

Signs of bad spark plug wires

Engine knocking

How to change spark plug wires?

Replacing a spark plug wire set is a relatively simple task, and can usually be completed in under an hour. You can follow these steps:

1. Remove the worn or faulty spark wire set.

To avoid confusion and prevent accidentally switching the wires, it is recommended to replace each spark plug wire individually, starting with the longest one. When removing the wires from either the spark plug or distributor cap, it is important to loosen the connection by twisting or rotating the boot. Yanking or forcefully pulling on the wires may cause them to break. Only pull on the boot and refrain from pulling on the cable.

2. Install the new spark plug wire set

Install the new spark plug wires in the same location as the old wires, making sure to connect each wire to the correct spark plug. If your new spark plug wires have boots, be sure to push the boot firmly onto the spark plug until it clicks into place.

3. Test the new spark plug wires
