Fuel Vapor Canisters And The EVAP System

A vapor canister stores fuel vapors in activated carbon as part of the evaporative emissions system. During suitable operating conditions, the purge system draws stored vapor toward the engine to be burned.

A-Premium offers charcoal canisters for selected vehicles. The housing, hose connections and emission-system configuration must match the vehicle's installed system.

      Choosing A Charcoal Canister Replacement

Compare the mounting points, hose ports and connection sizes with the original canister. A vehicle's engine, emissions equipment or build location can narrow the application on particular listings.

Check whether the required valves, hoses and filter components are part of the selected package. An EVAP warning or a fuel-filling problem needs system diagnosis, since a canister is only one component in the circuit.

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How is a vapor canister different from a purge valve?

The canister stores fuel vapor; the purge valve controls its flow toward the engine. Some designs combine components, but a canister listing does not automatically include every valve in the EVAP system.

Why can a fuel pump nozzle shut off before the tank is full?

A restriction in the tank vent path, a collapsed hose or a nozzle issue can interrupt filling. Mitsubishi service information identifies several possible causes, so the symptom alone does not identify a bad canister.

Can topping off the fuel tank affect the canister?

Overfilling can allow liquid fuel into the EVAP system on affected vehicles. Stop fueling as directed by the vehicle manufacturer and have a saturated canister diagnosed rather than assuming it can store vapor normally.

Does every charcoal canister include a purge or vent valve?

Package contents depend on the design. A replacement canister can be supplied as the canister itself or with attached components, so identify the valve and fittings needed for the specific repair.

Can an EVAP trouble code be caused by something other than the canister?

A leak or fault in a hose, valve or other part of the evaporative system can also set an EVAP code. The code is a starting point for diagnosis, not a guarantee that replacing the canister will resolve it.
