A disc brake caliper uses hydraulic pressure to move its piston or pistons and clamp the pads against the rotor. Position names must match the vehicle

A Driver Side Brake Caliper and Passenger Side Brake Caliper are side-specific. A front brake caliper should not be substituted for a rear brake caliper, even if the casting looks similar. Investigate Dragging, Leaks, and Uneven Pad Wear

Fluid around a caliper, a soft or low pedal, pulling, excessive heat, dragging, noise, or uneven pad wear warrants prompt inspection. These conditions do not identify the caliper by themselves. A restricted hose, worn pads or rotors, air in the hydraulic system, wheel-bearing play, or suspension and alignment problems can contribute to similar complaints.

On some replacement calipers, assembly grease near the piston boot can resemble leaked fluid, so clean the area and recheck it before diagnosing a hydraulic leak. Inspect the piston boot, bleeder, hose connection, and caliper body, and test the hydraulic system according to vehicle service information.

Inspect the brake pads and rotor friction surfaces for uneven wear, scoring, contamination, or heat damage. A dragging caliper can affect nearby parts, but replace each item according to measured condition and the service limits for that vehicle.
