How Do You Test a Fuel Pump Control Module?

There is no single universal voltage or resistance value for every FPCM. Some modules use pulse-width-modulated output, and a basic multimeter may display an averaged value that does not describe the signal accurately. Obtain the wiring diagram, connector view, expected data, and test conditions for the exact year, make, model, engine, and emissions configuration.

  1. Scan all relevant modules. Record current, pending, and history codes plus freeze-frame data. A communication code such as U0109 can also result from lost power, poor ground, or network wiring—not only an internally failed module.
  2. Check the battery and protected circuits. Confirm adequate system voltage and inspect the specified fuse and relay. Never install a higher-rated fuse to stop repeat failures.
  3. Inspect the module and harness. Look for water, corrosion, impact damage, overheated terminals, loose pins, damaged insulation, and poor grounds.
  4. Verify module power and ground. Perform the manufacturer’s voltage and voltage-drop checks under the specified conditions. A visible ground connection can still have excessive resistance.
  5. Check communication and commands. When supported, compare desired or commanded fuel pressure, actual pressure, pump command, module status, and relevant sensor data.

Where Is the Fuel Pump Control Module Located?

Fuel pump control module location varies widely. A separate module may be mounted on a frame rail, beneath the vehicle near the fuel tank, inside the trunk or cargo area, near a spare-tire well, under or behind a rear seat, or beneath interior trim. Some systems do not use a separately serviceable module at all.

Can you bypass a fuel pump control module?
